Clemente Orlandi and the San Nicola di Bari church in Colonna
Only recent studies have recognised that Clemente Orlandi was an architect who carried out a remarkable
activity in 18th century Rome, in the field of civil and religious buildings, as well as in ephemeral
architecture. The church of S. Nicola di Bari in Colonna testifies to Orlandi’s ability to rework the motifs
of the great Baroque architecture in simplified forms, but it was totally neglected and forgotten by late
eighteenth and nineteenth century scholars. Perhaps only a drawing by Gaudenzio Honorati (1796-97),
combined with a severe negative judgement, can refer to this building.
