Cultural heritage and urban restoration: interventions on industrial historical sites
Urban projects for historical industrial sites are often guided by economic and pragmatic criteria, despite
their historical, aesthetical and memorial relevance. In this context, this research has sought to study the
applicability of the theoretical principles of conservation and restoration in the practice of the urban
projects for the industrial heritage. This reflection introduced the theme of “
Urban Restoration
” into the
Brazilian academic community, paving the way for discussion on the theoretical bases necessary for the
ongoing urban interventions in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. This study was conducted at the University
of São Paulo, Brazil, under the guidance of Prof. Beatriz Mugayar Kühl, with a period of research at the
University of Rome La Sapienza, under the supervision of Prof. Giovanni Carbonara. The book resulting
from this research won the second place in the Architecture and Urbanism category of the “Jabuti Prize
2014”, the most important literary prize in Brazil.
