The Torre Appiani in Rio Marina (Elba Island)
The Torre degli Appiani is the symbol of Rio Marina, a little city of Elba Island. The tower went through
several years of abandonment, resulting in dangerous static issues. Thanks to the municipality, it was
possible to finance the conservation project of the building, whose side facing the sea was on the verge of
collapsing.
The paper aims to describe all the phases of the tower’s conservation, from the survey and the project to
the realisation of the works. Nowadays, the Torre degli Appiani is a museum, from which citizens can
experience and appreciate both exhibitions and the view.
Public funding is expected to start the reconstruction of the bridge. Finally, after this last step, the tower
will be again the connection between the sea and the village. [n.d.r.]
