This is a study of two marble herms from Insula 13 of Regio I, found during excavations by Maiuri in 1954–1956. A description of the two pieces
is followed by an art historical assessment seeking to identify the remote Hellenistic antecedents the craftsman probably drew upon. In the lack
of a stratigraphic context, some hypotheses at identification are put forward, taking account of the general situation of the
insula
as a whole and
of what we know about this
insula
from previous studies by the author.
