During the years when she was engaged in digs in the great suburban sanctuary of Portonaccio at Veii, Maria Santangelo also carried out excavations in the extended area of the ancient city, which for the first time was entirely deforested and subjected to deep ploughing by mechanical means. Santangelo’s researches remained largely unknown, unlike those conducted later by the British School. This article makes these researches known, drawing upon her personal archive, acquired after her death by the Soprintendenza ai Beni Archeologici dell’Etruria meridionale, integrated with documents found in the archive of the same Superintendence. A great deal of evidence has emerged on the northern area of the contrada Campetti, and in particular the nearby contrada Macchiagrande, where M. Santangelo excavated the remains, as yet unidentified, of a temple and a kiln, with the discovery of valuable architectural terracottas.
