In the 1950s a number of pottery microcontainers were found in Morgantina bearing stamped inscriptions mentioning Lykion. Thanks to this evidence it has been possible to ascribe production of the precious eye medicament to a precise place for the first time. However, if we consider the predominant rule of Syracuse over the south-eastern part of the Sicily and its relationship with Morgantina in the course of the 3rd century B.C., besides the size of these cities in proportion to the extension of the excavations carried out there, we cannot rule out the possibility that production of the medicament did not take place at Morgantina, as the finds would suggest, but, rather, in Syracuse. The possibility of confusing the place of consumption with that of production prompts particularly careful consideration of a microcontainer found in Syracuse, similar to the Morgantina specimens.
