A new analysis of archaeological structures preserved under the 15th-century church of
S. Teodoro has led to better knowledge of the succession of buildings and restorations in
that area since the Imperial Age, and has brought to light new elements, notably a fountain
or bath. In the Early Middle Ages some of these structures were reused to found a Christian
charitable institution, the primary diaconate of S. Teodoro, about which is it now possible
to put forward some conjectures. The main result of this study is indeed the reconstruction
suggested for the appearance of a room with apse, found during the
20th-century excavation,
which seems to belong to a large architectonic complex, probably to connect with the ancient
diaconate.
This building continued to use the pre-existing bath, perhaps maintained just to
meet the needs
of
the charitable institution.
